Frommer's Washington State
Published in Paperback by Frommer (April, 2002)
Average review score:

Very Useful Guide -- Enhanced Our Trip! This book is a Gem! We found it highly informative, accurate, and useful on our recent trip to Seattle and Ocean Shores, Washington. The book provides the essentials without being too wordy. Interesting tidbits galore! One example of the book's usefulness was a recommendation to dine at Ocean Crest Resort in Moclips because "you won't find a more spectacular view anywhere on the Washington coast." Well, from the outside, this Resort is nothing special. In fact, were it not for the book, we never would have thought of stopping there. But are we glad. What a view! Dense trees, framing an ocean view, with a winding wooden staircase leading in erratic zig zags down to the beach below. It was worth the cost of the book! ....
Frommer's Washington StateI found this to be an excellent user friendly, tradtional tourist guide book. However, it was published in 1998 and would be better if updated. It offers "The best of" in more than a dozen categories such as restaurants, B&Bs, hikes, etc which gives good starting points for trip planning. Phone numbers and web site address are available to obtain more detailed information on areas of interest. A map of "Washington State Driving Times " was very helful since we have found that in unfamiliar locations, driving times are sometimes easy to misfigure based only on milage.
Like other Frommer's guide books that I have used, I find this type of advice the best because it lists good choices from expensive to budget. For an average family tourist, this book is an excellent general guide.

Full Circle: One Man's Journey by Air, Train, Boat and Occasionally Very Sore Feet Around the 50,000 Miles of the Pacific Rim
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (June, 2000)

A highly enjoyable read...This book was a highly enjoyable read and really does the TV series justice. You get to share Palin's experiences throughout his journey in way that the TV series is unable to do. The little stories that he mentions like visiting the prison camp in Siberia, the offers from the "missie's" in China, and the references to his real life going on in the UK all create a memorable experience. Definetely my favorite out of all of his travelogues.
Either spend big bucks and go yourself, or buy this book!Michael Palin (of Monty Python fame) is more than funny: he's a perceptive and compassionate traveller! I loved his first two BBC travel series and their companion books, so when one day in Seattle, I read in the paper that the next evening he would begin a third, I made sure to tune in. I wasn't disappointed; from a remote Alaskan island so close to the International Dateline that Palin writes: "The Russian soldiers staring at me across the water have already had the day I'm having" to "the southernmost place of worship in the world, outside of Antarctica", this one is as good an armchair journey as any the BBC has produced. Something special: the photography is, as usual, superb, and there's an underwater sequence in the Philipines that has to be seen to be believed. So, either take a year off yourself (that's about what it took Palin), pack your own forty-eight (!) suitcases and spend your own mint to do this trip of a lifetime, or just do it with Mike Palin. After all, that's what books are for, isn't it?

Fun with the Family in Hawaii, 3rd : Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (November, 2000)
Average review score:

Hawaii With Kids -- Don't Leave Home Without This BookCopious notes on what activities and attractions are available and of interest to kids and other family members. Only shortcoming is minimal references to restaurants and accommodations. Author selects top 10 day trip ideas for each island and they were dead on for our family of five.
Easy to read, up-to-date information and great suggestions! It is very easy to find age appropriate activities for your children. The book is arranged in an easy to follow format which allows you to find special stops coming up as you drive. A great quick reference that we used many times a day while vacationing on Oahu.

A G.I. Named Joe: Stories of World War II in the Pacific Islands...and Some More
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (March, 2000)
Average review score:

Excellent Book!An interesting collection of stories about WWII (and after) told from the soldier's prospective. If you are a history buff this book is a must read.
A moving account of life in the South Pacific during WWIIThis book is an amazing collection of short stories by a soldier who spent over 3 years in the South Pacific during World War II. It is riveting and educational reading. It tells many stories of the battles on Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal, but it also contains many moving human interest stories about life during that time. I highly recommend this book for those who want to learn about that time, and what our fathers and grandfathers went through during World War II.

Oral Historian hits the markWhat an amazing set of stories - I thoroughly enjoy each of the segments and felt like I was brought into each of these people's lives. The first hand accounts along with the pictures made it a very captivating read. Enjoy this book!!
I Couldn't Put it DownThis poignant and entertaining collection of oral histories was among one of the most satisfying reads I've had in a long time. These first person narratives really highlighted the beauty, majesty, and diversity of life in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Average review score:

Extremely Helpful and right on target! This book has been invaluable in selecting the best restuarants from the thousands to choose from in San Francisco. Every time I've used this book I've discovered yet another gem of place with unique and outstanding food. The reviews are extremely accurate, right on down to the specific favorite menu items. It's easily portible, well organized and very informative and up to date. Highly recommended!
Better than Zagat'sgood fun and useful. i really agree with what they say about places. they tell me about the restaurants, good and bad, not themselves. covers lots of places out in the neighborhoods. maps are useful for finding places. it's nice looking, too.

Good Night Officially: The Pacific War Letters of a Destroyer Sailor (Reville Book)
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (April, 2000)
Average review score:

This was the real destroyer war in the PacificAlthough some of the love letters become repetitive, this book captures better than anything the true nature of the destroyer war in the Pacific against Japan. The commentary gets to the point of the hard work and anonymous sacrifice of the common enlisted man in the desperate fight against Japan. The final letter written by Yeoman Raines, and delivered to his wife after his death, is one of the most wrenching and moving literary expressions to come from this war.
Real life on a tin can (destroyer) in the South Pacific.Orvill Raines was my friend. We were together
from the time the ship was commissioned 4/3/44
until he died on April 6, 1945 at Okinawa.
Ray Ellen (his wife) kept these letters and when
I first contacted her in 1990 she mentioned them
to me and offered them to the HOWORTH VETS. We published them at our own expense.
Williams McBride took the War Diary AND
Letters/Memories and completed the manuscript
that became Good Night Officially.
After our Memorial Service aboard the USS
Kidd in Baton Rouge, I escorted her around
the ship and was able to answer all the questions that she had, had down thru the
years.
It made it possible. It made it worth while

A Guide to Ethnic Food in Los Angeles: Restaurants, Markets, Bakeries, Specialty Shops for the Food of Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Greece, Guatemala,
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (October, 1992)
Average review score:

Still the best book on LA eateriesThis is the greatest book on the best ethnic restaurants in LA. Hopefully, the author will put out a new edition. I have it. It's about 10 years old, and I'm not going to sell it. It's better than any new guide out there. Even if you don't go to these places, it's an interesting read.
Extraordinary guide to L.A. ethnic communities & their cuisiWhen this book first came out about 10 yrs. ago or more it was a revelation. In one collection it guided you through EVERY major ethnic community in the greater L.A. region and told you which were the best restaurants, bakeries, markets, etc. I don't know of any other book that comes to close to being this comprehensive & incisive.
If you ever spend any time in L.A. & you are interested in ethnic food, you must have this book.
